Indian Railways designs two 25KV shunting engine to take a step further towards zero carbon emission network

By 2030, the Ministry of Railways aims to turn the Indian Railway network into Green Railways and has taken a range of measures to counter global warming and fight climate change.

Indian Railways is taking another step towards a network of zero carbon emissions! According to the Railway Ministry, two 25 KV shunting engines have recently been designed at Kanchrapara Workshop in West Bengal. The ministry claimed that these newly built engines can also be powered by batteries. With this achievement, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said, the Kanchrapara Workshop in West Bengal became the country's first railway workshop with smokeless electric traction. Railway electrification, green certification for structures or stations, improving the energy quality of trains and locomotives as well as fixed installations, installing bio-toilets in train coaches and also switching to renewable energy sources are some of the main steps taken by the national carrier to achieve net zero carbon emissions.

The national transporter completed electrification of more than 40,000 Rkm (63 percent of Broad Gauge routes) during 2014-2020, where electrification work was conducted on 18,605 km until July 2020. Previously, Indian Railways had completed just 3,835 km of electrification work during the 2009-14 period. A fixed electrification target of 7000 Rkm for the year 2020-21 was set by the Railway Ministry. The electrification of all rail routes on the Broad Gauge network is scheduled for December 2023.

The national transport company has also taken a number of measures to encourage renewable energy. The national transporter works to harness the capacity of 500 Mega Watts (MW) of energy by roof top solar panels (Developer model). Besides this, Indian Railways is also trying to produce electricity for running trains from land-based solar installations. In addition to these initiatives, some other moves towards zero carbon emissions have been taken by Indian Railways.

Indian Railways working to increase short-distance train fares to deter unnecessary travel

The ministry of railways explained on Wednesday that it has imposed "slightly higher fares" in short-distance commuter trains after they resumed service following the shutdown to "discourage needless travel." Indian Railways will introduce a new air-conditioned general second-class coach in the near future

Indian Railways is working on a project that will revolutionise how ordinary people travel by train! A prototype of a new air-conditioned general second class coach will be rolled out by the end of this year. Indian Railways is looking to revamp unreserved second class coaches by making them air-conditioned, after introducing an Economy AC 3-tier train.
